Components of Dutch health insurance

Dutch health care policies are made up of two components: basic insurance (basisverzekering) and additional insurance (aanvullende verzekering)

Basic insurance is compulsory, and it provides access to the same basic coverage across all health insurers, as it’s set by the government. It costs around €125 per month.

If you expect to need additional medical treatment, you might also need to op for extra coverage. This is the part where private health insurance providers (zorgverzekeraars) compete with one another to offer policies that are best tailored to your expected health needs and lifestyle. This will of course increase your premium. Below you will find a general overview of the services covered by the basic and additional insurance.

Services covered by basic insurance

  • Appointments with your GP (huisarts)
  • Hospital stays, surgery and emergency treatment
  • Ambulance services and patient transport
  • Prescription medication
  • Blood tests
  • Dental care for children under 18
