DigiD: Your Digital Identity in the Netherlands

DigiD is how you identify yourself when taking care of your affairs online with Dutch institutions. Learn more about what it is and how to use it.

What is DigiD?

DigiD is the abbreviation of Digital IDentification. DigiD allows you to identify yourself when taking care of your affairs online, such as with government websites, educational institutes, your municipality, healthcare institutions, the tax authority or your pension fund. Your DigiD allows you to log in anywhere easily and securely, and ensures that your personal data are always protected.

When living and working in the Netherlands, having a DigiD is inevitable, so try to apply for one as soon as possible after you arrive in the Netherlands and have acquired a BSN number.

How to apply

You can apply for a Digid via the DigiD application.

After applying, you will receive a letter with an activation code within a few days. Activate your DigiD with your username, password and this code. After activation you can log in and use your DigiD.

How to use your DigiD

Institutions like the ones mentioned above will automatically ask you to enter your DigiD when dealing with their websites. There are two login methods for DigiD:

  • via the DigiD app (Android and iOS), recommended;
  • login with username, password and SMS (text message) verification.
