Costs of studying in the Netherlands

You may wonder about the price tag on studying in the Netherlands, as studying hardly ever comes cheap, unfortunately. Nibud collected the average costs:

  • The tuition fee for higher education amounts to €2083 for the academic year 2019/2020. First-year students pay only half of this. You can either pay monthly or pay the total amount at the start of the academic year.
  • If you study part time, the tuition fee is €1240 this academic year.
  • Some institutions or programmes are not subsidised by the national government. Instead of just paying the national tuition fee you will pay the institutional tuition fee. What this amounts to, differs from institution to institution. It can, however, never be lower than the legal tuition fee, except when a joint degree with a foreign institution is concerned.
  • Students living away from home spend €1082 on average per month on tuition fees and rent. The remaining monthly costs on average are:
  • €181 on groceries
  • €58 study books and other necessities
  • €63 on transport
  • €146 on going out, leisure activities, sports
  • €47 on clothing and shoes
  • €26 on telephone contract

Scholarships in the Netherlands

A more affordable way to study abroad is to make use of an exchange programme. The Nuffic website (Netherlands Universities’ Foundation for International Cooperation) provides an overview of all exchange programmes. Study grants and government assistance in the Netherlands are coordinated by Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO – The Education Executive Agency of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science). They offer financial assistance to Dutch students and (in some cases) foreign students. To see if you might be eligible for financial assistance, visit the DUO website, which is also available in English.
